The Book of Winter : A Reading Retreat for Hay Winter Festival
4 Nights
26th - 30th November 2026
This four-night reading retreat, guided by Simon Savidge, takes place alongside the Hay Winter Festival — an invitation to slow down, hunker in, and spend time with books in the company of like-minded readers.
Set within the cosy surroundings of Chapel on the Green, the retreat offers a warm and welcoming base to return to after days spent exploring the festival. There will be time to dip into events and talks in Hay-on-Wye, experience the town as it begins to glow with winter lights, and then come back together to share meals, conversation and reflections from the day.
Across the retreat, you’ll have space to immerse yourself in your own reading, take part in shared discussions, and enjoy a gentle rhythm of time both together and alone. The programme will also include a group festival event as part of the weekend, as well as walks in the surrounding landscape — a chance to step out into the winter air and reconnect with nature.
Each morning begins with the option of gentle yoga and a hearty breakfast, while evenings are centred around communal meals, fireside conversations and the simple pleasure of reading side by side. With nourishing vegetarian and vegan food, and space to rest and restore, this retreat is designed as a longer, more spacious winter gathering — a chance to fully unwind, find inspiration, and ease into the festive season.

“I read for pleasure and that is the moment I learn the most.”
Margaret Atwood
